I do know with legg perthes the dog will limp sometimes.. this shows up usually within the first year.. With Lux. Patella sometimes they will hold the leg up and skip sort. There are 4 grades of Lux. Patella.. some require surgery and some don't..
Legg perthes definitely requires surgery to repair.. It is very painfull for the dog.
I'm sure others will add much more to this. You will need x rays to diagnose Legg Perthes but usually a vet can palpate the knee for Lux. Patella.
