Actually, both parents have to carry a Parti gene in order for the puppy to be parti colored. The parents can look like your traditional colored yorkie but if they both carry the parti gene approximately 25% of their offspring will be parti colored, 50% will be parti carriers and 25% will not carry the parti gene.
If this pups sire is bred to a different dam (who doesn't carry the parti gene) they will not produce a parti colored pup but some of their traditional colored offspring will be carriers of the parti gene. I have more information on the history of Parti yorkies on my website.
