He got hit 1/2 way across and I ran out and picked him up and brought him to my side but it was too late, he was doi (dead on impact) and my neice was DEVASTATED!!! Crying and sooo upset and the owner (some young punk) comes running over from the other side of the street, and he kept saying 'my wife is going to kill me, just KILL ME" I was saying to him "are you an idiot??? This is a BABY!! You dont bring it outside without a leash on THIS road!!!!!" Oh I was sooooooo ANGRY and upset I was shaking!!! I called the police to call animal control and they came and took away the baby! It was a 3 month old Pug!!! Bet you that hubby got couch duty for about oooohhh a few weeks for SURE!!! Its soooooo sad!!!
i cant stand people who don't put their leashes on dogs either.. we have a farm up the street and they let their two labs go where ever they want.. the pound once and while will pick them up but atleast they know if you say go home they will. they must be almost 10 too. and they have been wondering around since they were about 1 and have never been hit.. the dog that got hit wasnt even from around here.. they were visiting our neighbor on the corner.. they were about 100 feet from the house and the dog turned around and walked out into the street.. what made me mad was the person who hit it didnt even attempt to stop! she could have too or made less of an impact.. or she could have swirved! i mean it was a big dog you dont miss a 75+ pound brown dog walking into the street and if you do you dont miss the impact and a 16 year old girl screaming at you waving her arms in the middle of the street. when my mom gets home we're going to go talk to my neighbor ,, the one that went after the person (he didnt find the person) and see if he knows if the dog is okay.

Everybody is in a hurry. But speeding in neighborhoods is ridiculous.

Contact the police, the city council and the media.

One of my girlfriends successfully got a stop sign put up in her neighborhood with the smallest effort. Read what your city requires. The more neighbors you get behind you the better. Perhaps you could even work to get the speed limit dropped to 25 mph in your neighborhood. Also, call your city councilperson at home & make them aware of it going on - this is their job - you are not bothering them!

I live on a busy neighborhood street - it lays between 2 main arteries of my city - actually both these other streets reach out into the suburbs to the east & west. The speed on my street is 30 mph which makes no sense, because the next street over is 25 mph & has plenty of stop signs, while there is only 1 stop sign on my street between the 2 main arteries. I ought to work on getting it lowered because I can't believe how fast people drive and I remember a decade ago - when I raised Bichons and knew nothing about Yorkies, I saw one of the little yorkies that a gal 2 blocks down had, laying dead on the parking in front of her house evidently killed by a car.

Does your police department have those mobile units that tell drivers how fast they are going? I see people slow down when they see those units. Get the police department to put one on your street for a week or two & video tape people as was suggested earlier. Call the police & ask to speak with someone in the traffic department - that's who handles speeders.

Also, I work in the media - that's a good place to turn to. Media outlets are suffering these days - they are all looking for the local story to get people reading or tuned in. Speeders are definitely that type of story because people are passionate about others not speeding in their neighborhoods.

One of our local TV stations did this entire feature this spring called SOS - Stop Our Speeders - they actually asked viewers to email them with speeding problems, they mapped all the neighborhood problems in the city & gave some viewers speed guns to go out & clock the speeders with. Then they got the police involved. If you want to see/read some of the reports here are two links: http://www.kcci.com/news/13294227/detail.html

Also here is video link to part of the report that includes suggestions from a police officer on what to do about speeders: http://www.kcci.com/video/13303213/index.html

Good luck hon!
we do have the mobile units for years everyone in this neighborhood fought for them.. well we got one for.. a day! how ridiculous is that? it was about 2 weeks ago too! i deffinatly want to get media involved.. my city right now (haverhill) is trying to redeem themselves.. downtown is really bad.. i mean they have special police forces down there and people dont care.. there are drugs, prostitutes, and violence and they want to clean it up.. if they start getting bad press the mayor will hopefully realize that something needs to be done about my part of town. (haverhill is divided up into three sections where i live ward hill which is next to n. andover.. bradford which is in the middle and is an okay place to live and then there is haverhil which is downtown and not a good place especially after dark.)
