I can contain the pain with Ibruprophin, and I've been googling all night and found that the treatment for it just eases the pain, but doesn't increase the speed of healing. I just don't have time to go to my dentist every 24 hours for a packing.

Oh my heart goes out to you. I had that in 1999, but did not know what it was and boy did it hurt! I was out of school for 2 weeks
Yes, I had the gauze pads also ... if a blood scab forms, that is good, b/c it blocks the socket ....
(I also had an apiectomy, so I was hurting from 2 places) ... I hope you get well soon ... I have very little to say that is encouraging .... get pain pills ... do not take "no" for an answer ....
