I had Ben neutered at 6 months. Here in the UK vets will not neuter or spay dogs until they are 6 months because they want them to develop properly first. Most vets here say for small breeds, 6 months, for medium breeds, 12 months and for large breeds, 18 months. Its because if you neuter or spay them before they have matured then the growth plates fuse later and that can leave them looking stragely 'leggy'.
