It sounds like it might be the dish that you're putting the food on...If it's metal or has any gold/silver trim or anything like that, don't put it in there.
I would try to avoid microwaving food for them anyway though. You might try putting their food in a bowl, and then putting the bowl in warm water so that it comes up the sides of the outside of the bowl halfway...This is good way to warm up their food without having to zap it.
