I do have a herniated disc in my lower back but that's not actually why I'm having surgery--I no longer have pain or symptoms from that because I've been exercising at least 5 days a week for 1-2 hours. You are right, exercise is DEFINITELY key. But while I was having problems last year, a tiny tumor showed up on my first MRI--it was farther above the herniated disc--and has been monitored for the past year. It's still tiny and asymptomatic but it will be better to remove it now while it's still small. Plus I currently feel great from all the exercising I've been doing so I hope the recovery period won't be quite as long.
