I have both hardwod and laminate. The hardwood does cost more and is pretty, I worry about when accidents happen that the urine might leak thru both the hardwood and laminate to the underlayment. I have had no problems with the laminate scratching and it is eay to clean, (I was told only a damp mop and vinigar water). The only other alternative would be ceramic tile with a throw rug on top which could be washed. I do know I was so happy to get rid of the carpet.
