For anyone who uses a crate/xpen to confine your pups while you're away, at night, ect how old are they before you 'trust' them enough for free roam?

Bailey's 6 months old now and still goes in his crate at night and when I'm not home but I'm wondering if he's 'old enough' now to not use it anymore? With our dogue de bordeaux we crate trained him and we used his crate with him until he was about 7 months old, after that he was allowed free roam of the house at night, and while we were gone and he's been fine (no destroying things, ect). Bailey still throws a tantrum when he has to go to bed at night (4 months of this is wearing on the nerves).

What have been you guys' experiences?
