I think you did the right thing. But the owner of the dog should be far more careful of their own dog...they got lucky this time b/c you were kind enough not to take it to the next level...however, if this dog decides to attack a young child b/c it looks like its prey, then that's a whole different story. Anyone who owns a dog is responsible and accountable for their dogs actions.
