If you want your baby to survive an accident, then yes, a car seat is necessary. Just imagine what even a fender bender would do to them without being restrained
The lap is the absolute WORST place for them, as the airbag (or your flying body) would smash them to smitereens in even a low speed crash.
It's a good investment.
