You'll get used to it. There's nothing wrong with having a bit of a weak stomach; you just have to not think about it in certain terms while you're in the middle of it. For example, if you don't like blood, you're going to have to be around it at some point.....so you turn off the part of your brain that personalizes it and you "detach" and just do what you need to do to be therapeutic; focus on the TASK,not the grossness of whatever it is. There is always something that will get to you; that's NORMAL and not very many people can tolerate EVERYTHING. I had a thing with seeing metal sticking out of people's skin...I have no idea why it bothers me so much, but it always has. Giving injections never bothered me a bit, but to see a big metal needle sticking out of someone's back for a lumbar puncture or a cannula sticking out of someone's abdomen to drain fluid just affected me. You just learn what the things are that you really CAN'T deal with and either get thru it or have someone help you out. The usual stuff, like smells, excretions, secretions etc....I don't want to gross anyone out, but you know what I mean....that stuff you'll get used to. It won't be the most fun stuff you've ever done in your life, but you'll get over it. Also, once you've been doing it awhile, you'll find the type of nursing that suits you most; Trauma freaks me out, but ICU, where everything is relatively controlled (in a warped kind of way) was my forte. Pediatrics wasnt' my cup of tea, but I loved working with infant heart surgeries. You'll learn along the way!
And the most important thing to keep in mind is that whatever you're doing, no matter how small of a thing it seems, is something that's really HELPING a patient; it's something that they can't do for themselves, so you're making their life better in some way. It's all part of the growing and learning process. You'll do just fine . Good luck on your wonderful journey!
