I think that the most common cause is something in the nose irritating the lining like a grass seed, small burr, or something similar. Did the ER vet look up his nose? They suggested poisoning because it can prevent blood from clotting and cause nose bleeds. But if that were the case, he would have other symptoms as well so I think that you're okay. Keep an eye on him and take him in asap if he gets worse, stops eating, or seems lethargic.
