From what you've said your vet has told you, I think I might be looking for a new vet. For example, slim chance of her being pregnant since this was their first mating (doesn't matter if it's the first or tenth time - can still get pregnant easily), very little chance since the male only has one testicle (still has one testicle...), saying pups grow according to mom only (only partially true - with a male more than twice her size the pups could easily grow to be too large for her to naturally give birth to ESPECIALLY if she happens to only be pregnant with one or possibly two), and then problems with an X-Ray before (vet not knowing what he's looking for??). Just sounds like your vet isn't exactly up on everything...
I meant to say this in my first post and forgot - if your male has one descended testicle and one inside the body, you really need to have him neutered (or at least the nondescended testicle removed). If you don't, your male will most likely develop cancer from the retained testicle.
If you don't want to do an X-ray, you can opt for an ultrasound.
