I've never used a doggie diaper on Cody, I use regular baby diapers. He gets them put on when he goes in the house, not an accident (if we didn't get him out in time) but when he's been out many times and just goes on the floor, I will put a diaper on him he then knows he did wrong. When he whines to go out i will take it off him and take him out and give a treat. Needless to say he HATES the diaper. I also used the diaper when we went to visit my family for a week. Since it was a strange place and strange people I put it on him so he wouldn't have accidents.
