I'm in Interior Design, and it's hard... you can make good money, but you have to have the right clientele. In order to get good clients, or a job with a good furniture dealer, architect, or design firm, you have to have a BA or a BFA in Interior Architecture. I know there are many people that have businesses that call themselves Interior Designers, but they are not academically educated in the field, but do usually have lots of experience in the arena. Right now, there is legislation that has passes or is in process of being passed in many states that will "Weed out" the non-degreed people, and they by law cannot call themselves Interior Designers. Even if you have a degree, you have to keep up with the continuing education and take tests to stay current and marketable. If it's something you're interested in, by all means, go for it! But, keep in mind that unless you have a 4 year degree in the field, it may be very difficult to find a good position that pays well, and that you're happy working in.
Right now, I work with only commercial interior environments, and it's challenging and interesting. There are rewards that come with it, but before you enter into a field like this one, I just wanted you to be aware of the reality of the busines and the requirements that are necessary to make good money in this type of career. |
