I've tried to read up on this...as near as I can tell, while garlic contains the same toxin as onions its in an incredibly minute quantity. Garlic in moderation should be safe...that's JMO, please research it yourself before giving your pet garlic.
I did find many examples on "other" forums of people stating they had fed all of their dogs garlic for many years without problem.
In reality, I don't think there has been much scientific research into the effect of garlic for good or bad, so all evidence is anecdotal.
