Yea, I would also say it is a tooth or gum problem. My vet also said Yorkies are bad for bad teeth--many needing them pulled later in life because of desease. Said to be sure and give her dental chews and brush her teeth every day. I would think a Maltese would be the same. Although my mom had a little 3# one, and never brushed lher teeth and she was fine. I had a Pomerian that was horrible! No one could get close to her because of the bad breath!
