Every reputable breeder I know of offers some kind of health guarantee at least for the first year of the pup's life that covers any genetic defects. If the pup should die, an autopsy would need to confirm a genetic problem. Of course, no one can guarantee the pup isn't going to get naturally sick and/or die and the health guarantees I've seen don't cover anything other than genetic and/or congenital defects that are life threatening such as liver shunt.
