Another MIL story - only this one's funny I am trying very hard to get along with my mother in law these days. She is doing myself and DH a HUGE favor by picking the kids up from school 2- 3 days a week. I am extremely grateful for that and have told her so.
I know she gets lonely there by herself just like I do here. So today I suggested we go and get lunch.
The subject of my going back to school came up. The conversation went like this:
MIL: What are you going to be studying in school?
Me: Well, I've always wanted to be an attorney so I'm going to aim for that.
MIL: That's like a lawyer, isn't it?
Me: Yes, it is.
MIL: What kind of lawyer do you want to be?
Me: I really want to go into civil rights law.
(This is where it gets funny)
MIL: What? I thought that civil war was over already!
Me: It is. It ended quite a few years ago I believe.
MIL: And they're still fighting about it?
Me: Well, in some areas of the south I'm sure they are (I was being a smart@ss), but I'm sure for the most part its over and done with.
MIL: Well, you aren't going to make any money in that then!
Keeping a straight face during that conversation was THE hardest thing I have ever done! You know, I can't even dislike her anymore. I think I finally understand that she is just a very simple person who is truly naive in the ways of the world. Nothing she has said about Susanah or "blood relations" bothers me anymore. I can't explain it, I just can't be angry with her right now. Maybe I'm in shock....
