She's not going to stay with you and tell you when it's time, she'll try to seek a dark place and dig and dig. For her safetyness and those puppies, it would be best to confine her. Many of us have girls that have free reign of the house but before whelping we confine them.
But if you choose not to, just be prepared that you may not find her when the time comes. Look in closets, under beds, which are very hard for us to get under (but they love).

When I put her in the whelping box and put the x-pen around it, she gets out and lies down on her pee pad. Then she cries when no one is in the room. After about an hour, I give up and let her out. I don't want her to be upset. Right now she is on the couch with her head under the pillow. I have gates up so there are limited placed the kids can go. She has not started digging at all. Just sleeps all day and night, except when she wants to eat or potty. She needs a skateboard to hold her belly off the floor. With my luck, she will have the babies in my bed in the middle of the night.......
And Ollie (the daddy) just sleeps, eats and plays - like all men. His work is done.
