I dont think they have to weigh 10lbs to exert 10lbs worth of pressure on the clasp. I got my breakaway at Walmart for $2.97. It is a kitten collar. When they get caught and struggle, it is enough pressure to open the clasp. Zoey only weighed 3 lbs and hers popped right open when she was caught. I dont think they would make kitten colars that wont open easily because there arent many 10lb kittens.
