Well, consistency is the key. Also, since you work you are not going to have your puppy potty trained as quickly, of course, as someone who is home with them all day.
You cannot take your eyes off them for a minute if you are going to allow them to run around the house. They have to have some boundaries, though, if you are going to allow them any part of the house until they are housebroken. I always gave mine cheese as a treat for pottying where they were supposed to. I also used doorbells of which I sing their praise at every opportunity.
