And like Judyeve said, Manhattan is referred to as "The City", while all the other boroughs are called by their actual names. (personally i barely classify Staten Island as part of NYC, i don't go there)

Staten Island really isn't considered a borough by New Yorkers. Every few years they try to become a city unto themselves, and before the Verrazano Bridge, you had to take a boat to get there. This year they're trying to become a city again. Brooklyn people don't really consider Queens residents "real" New Yorkers. They're more like suburbanites from the Island. We discuss the Bronx in a whisper. We're afraid of it.
