We used treats such as pieces of carrot or cereal as a treat when our puppies did go outside or on the potty pad. As for the crate, I was told by the vet to reduce the space they have in the crate. If they have alot of room when you are potty training, they will use one side for a bathroom and the other to sleep on. I only had to do this during potty training. Now they have the whole crate and never have an accident. If I leave them for more than 1 1/2 hrs, I put them in a bathroom with a pee pad. Good luck with training your little one!
