They have kids this upsets me no end when they get a breed that in it's background it has shown to be aggressive when there are over 150 breeds they could have chosen from.... |
Now I will say this - _I_ have children. Young children.
But - they KNOW what is right and what is wrong. We have a rescued beagle whom they may hold and hug. They may NOT hold Jasmine unless they are sitting down and with me - period.
Those were the rules we established from day one and even my 15 month old abides by them.
My children grew up with animals - our cat, several horses, always a dog or two depending on who needed help at the time *big grin*.
But for my Yorkie I did a lot of research, talked with the breeder extensively about the parents and why she selected those particular dogs, etc. We also bought a puppy who could be easily socialized and the ONE time Jasmine growled at my son for something I told her "Momma dog" style that it wasn't acceptable and it's never happened since.
BOTH my kiddos are learning the rules of what is right and what is wrong - my two legged and my four legged. :-)
BUT - I'm also home with them most of the day or else my husband is so they get lots of attention. AND they don't have unlimited or unsupervised time together. AND we bought from good stock.
Jasmine's mother was 1 lb over the acceptable limit but she was the sweetest and most lovable of the four bitches in her breeding program. So we wanted one of those puppies. :-)
Like I said....I did my homework.
I think having Yorkies and kids is a challenge - and has to be done properly. But it's doable.

ETA - I know some Yorkies tend to be "one person" dogs while others are "love everyone" dogs. Jasmine is a love everyone dog which is what our family needed. So that's what I waited over a year to procure for our family. :-)
