my dad holds 2 patents the first one he started doing without a lawyer he it found that it was easier to do with a lawyer both ended up costing between $10,000 and $12,000 by the time everything was said and done. It is expensive but worth it, if I remember right, once you do the patent search your idea is protected to an extent and throughout the process on the first idea he had he drug it out a little longer so that he could afford to pay because money was a little tighter at the time. this info is pretty general but maybe it will help.
