Hmm, this is a tough one. It sounds rather odd, and vet sounds pretty casual about it. But, may kennel cough will irritate for awhile. I'd recommend getting him to swallow something when this happens - just a bit of something to help open/move the throat and moisten it just a bit. Maybe a smidge of honey or yogurt or cottage cheese, even a dab of Nutrical if he is stressed at the time.
