I have always used the retractable leashes and I prefer them over a regular leash. I feel like I have more control because I can adjust the length yet I still have a handle to hold on to. I'm currently watching my brother's boxer and he uses a regular leash and I feel like I have no control with that regular leash. The leash already came flying out of my hand once.
The retractable leashes also last pretty long. I still have the original ones. When I do decide to replace them, however, I will replace them with the "all belt" ones rather than the part cord/part belt ones because they are safer. I think it was simonandhallie who mentioned previously that it can get dangerous when you have 2 dogs running and the cords wrap themselves around you. The all belt ones seem to be a bit more expensive but I think that it's worth the price for the extra safety feature.
