It doesn't sound good to me. Are you interested in adopting this dog, or do just want to help it. Maybe you can have it groomed while the lady's away, and have it's nails clipped. You can just tell the lady you wanted to give her a spa treatment while she was on vacation. Maybe she'll get the hint.
