I am so happy to hear he came back. We just went through the same thing with my niece's 3 month old beagle pup. She got out of a yard that was completely privacy fenced. They left the gate open in hopes she would come home and she did. I think they both realized how good they had it at home!
I don't know how big your baby is but Sophie is 10 lbs. and when we put a gate up we have to put one on top of the other. We even have to angle the top gate forward so she can't climb out. The little escape artist. If your baby was the one who got the gate open you will probably have to be even more careful to keep him in. Sophie got over the gate one time and that was all it took. From then on we can't hardly keep her in. I hope for your sake it was just an accident.
