Hi! Some of my doggie clothes have the slits. With the ones that don't, I still use the harness, but the leash has to come out the top of the shirt collar. This results in the shirt collar being pushed back by the leash, but it still works okay. But I understand your frustration. It would be nice if all the clothes had the slits in them.
