I was told on the phone that the pup would grow up to be about 2.5 lbs. Then when I got to the breeder's place, he brought me out two males to choose from and wouldn't let me in the house. His house stank really badly and I saw some dogs in cages through the door. I asked him if he kept his dogs in cages and he said that they liked to be confined to their crates throughout the day. I picked one of the pups and this time he told me that the pup would grow to be 3 lbs. I asked to see the mom and dad and he said that they were both away being bred at the time and showed me a couple of pictures on printer paper.
He also told me on the phone that the puppy would be micro chipped, but didn't mention anything about it when I got there. I asked him to guarantee that the dog wouldn't be more than 3 lbs and he said that he would guarantee that it wouldn't be more than 4 lbs.

Even though this guy sounded fishy, the puppy looked so tiny and I thought that at the worst possibility, I would be saving a little dog from a bad breeder.

The next day I took the puppy to my vet and she said it would grow to be 6 or 7 lbs and maybe even more. I called the breeder and told him that I had paid him for a 3 lbs dog and not a 7 lbs one. He told me he could get me a smaller teacup dog next weekend. I asked him how many litters he has in a year and he said about 16!

This guy also breeds English Bulldogs, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Maltese and Poodles. This is his website: http://www.fairwinds1.piczo.com/?cr=3&rfm=y .

I got suspicious and googled his name and it came up on a site called Puppy Mill Detective: http://jowlflapper.com/phpBB2/viewto...654ba695bf7b8a .

Also his wife or partner named Doreen Deketelaere is mentioned. This is her website: http://www.pupbones.piczo.com/?cr=7&rfm=y .

I'm not sure what to do now. I like my puppy and he is a cute, seemingly healthy little fellow, but my heart was set on a much smaller dog. But I don't want to exchange him for a smaller one either because that would mean giving him back to a possible puppy mill and who knows what will happen to him.

Can anyone give me any advice or ideas as to what I should do?

A good, reputable breeder will let you come inside, see the parents, and will let you see/ask whatever you want. They will have nothing to hide, and be proud of their facility. First thing I would do is call some sort of official and have him checked out. Usually if they are breeding multiple breeds and keeping them all confined in cages all day they are in it for the money and not to provide healthy babies. Also, there is no such thing as a "tea cup" yorkie. Health can become an issue when you go under 3 pounds, I hate hate hate when "breeders" try to breed as small as they can. Even if your pup gets to be 4, 5, 6, 7 pounds that is still so small! Having a slightly bigger dog is actually nice because then you don't feel like you have to treat them like glass. Another part that worries me is that he could "get you" a teacup...where does he have them stashed away?? Always go with your gut, it never fails you. If I were you (although I know it would be hard) I would have someone go check him out.

My breeder was so good about having a good relationship with me, and we were in contact before my pup was even born. I would love up that yorkie you have. He for sure has a better home with you than this guy......good luck and keep us posted.
