I might be in the minority - but I've often expressed my belief that the "stay away from high protein" mantra might not be as correct as some think.

A dog in NATURE would consume a diet of almost 100% protein. RAW and BARF diets, which are usually considered optimal, are pretty much 100% protein. It is mostly understood that canines don't have a need for grains or veggies - even if some are consumed "accidentally" in nature. Their digestive systems are just not designed for optimal digestion of these nutrients.

If kidneys are healthy, extra protein is just excreted or converted, just as in us humans. If kidneys are unhealthy, then extra consideration for amounts and types of proteins should be undertaken.

Bottom line is: do your own research, don't assume your vet has much time to know anything about canine nutrition, find what works for your dog, be open to new ideas, and keep learning. And, most of all - DON'T JUDGE!

I homecook and feed Orijen for grazing; I particularly like Orijen's White Paper on canine nutrition - very educational: http://www.championpetfoods.com/orij...hite_paper.pdf
