I assume you are talking about the snap on comb guards that fit over a clipper blade. Always clip in the direction the hair grows, not against it.
The dog should be combed out bathed brushed dried. Clip, brush up, clip again until it is even. With snap on combs, you will still need to scissor even unless you dont care that it isn't a perfect job as a professional groomer would do.
