I do the same thing. Izzie has some of these mats too. The key for us is not to try a tackle them all in one session. When the mat is too hard to brush out I take a small pair of scissors and cut straight up the middle of it, and then try and brush it. I use the edge of a slicker brush. I try and hold the mat against her skin to try and not pull too much. Sometimes I just have to cut the mat out. If you shampoo and condition them and wrap them in a towel it helps keep them quiet.
Once you get a section mat free brush it briefly every day to keep it that way, then the next bath do another little section.
