I have been told this before and I have to constantly remind myself to do that. It is such instinct to baby them when they are upset. But you are right, last night was 3 of my dog's first 4th of July with us. They immediately freaked out but then settled right down when we ignored them and then we all watched the fireworks from our window. My golden retriever spent the rest of the night panting even though the fireworks had stopped. We adopted him from the pound around the end of JUly 4 years ago. We are sure he lost his original home by running away on the 4th of July.
