Using the dematting comb doesnt hurt if you do it right. You take two fingers and put them around the hair right before the matt toward the skin. You then take the dematting comb through the matt. You will pull the comb through the matt only and you wont be pulling on skin which hurts. When I did Jewels like this she didnt yelp once
