distilled water will help with this as i have a maltese and no red stuff - alot is hereditary as well.
www.eyeenvy.com is great for this as well just buy the bottle and use a cotton pad to clean.

It is bacteria that is coming out of the tear duct. You could use probiotics dds plus (acidopholus, biffidus and fos) as that is good bacteria killing bad bacteria in there gut as a lot of what they eat comes out through skin and other places. The healthier the gut the better the body.
