I dock 1/4 inch into the black looking for where the tail starts to get narrower. Each tail is different so if you just dock at the same place on each puppy some tails will be shorter then others, so you have to look at where it narrows.

I do my own tails and dew claws it seems easier on the puppies then having to travel at such an early age. I do them myself because I prefer not to have my puppies around any other possibly sick animals that young.
