The doctor that I work for does EGD's. You will be given demeral and versed for what is called "twilight sleep". You will not be "put under" but you won't remember anything. I have assisted with a few and it appears the worst part is swallowing the tube. Hopefully you will have a better experience with the IV this time. Good luck with everything! I hope they find out what's causing your pain and get you all fixed up!!
