  Hi Betsy . . . a couple of reasons.  The top of the line they have (Designer SE) is costing me so much more and although I know they are wonderful machines, I don't have any experience with them 

 The one I got is slightly lower than the Bernina top of the line and since I already have a Bernina machine I can attest to its quality and durability.  These machines are meant to be handed down to my next of kin 

 so I played safe (not that I don't think Viking won't) 

 And I think hubby wants me to stick to a Bernina Brand (he got my machine as a b-day gift over 15 years ago and it was used when he bought it 

 ) that is why he finally agreed not to mention timing since he played his best round of golf ever 

  . .  My formost concern is the ease of the software to convert any picture or print to digitized form and they both are pretty easy 
 
  
OH I have checked both quality using the same silk thread of course and they both do wonderful work. 
I did not know there was a little Bernina?  My old one is super heavy
