Since he's not getting into any trouble, maybe he's ready for some more space. Try keeping him contained in one room with a comfy bed, plenty of toys and chewies, food and pee pads and see how that goes. Use a baby gate to keep him in there. Or, maybe an expen. He might get upset being locked into his crate since he has had some freedom.
