Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I literally followed the instructions on this page:

At first I wasn't so successful because I was using little cookies as rewards. But when I switched to beef jerky type treats, he was learning 1-2 tricks a day. The treat made a big difference in the speed he learned things. He was more into it and more willing to perform.
