I have a Maltese and my experience w/ the personalities of the two breeds is very similar to LuvMyPupster. My Malt, Tuffy, is very high strung, yappy and hyper as can be. Don't get me wrong, I love him to pieces, but he's a handful. He doesn't have the typical Maltese personality that I hear most people talk about. My Yorkie, Pixie, is so calm, sweet and loves nothing more than to cuddle up on my lap. Pixie has had a really good influence on Tuffy and has actually calmed him down a bit and they get along great. The hair care on my Maltese is a pain in the butt.. tear staining is an issue that a lot of Maltese have and it's hard to get rid of and white hair is a chore in and of itself. My Maltese has a very cottony coat so he mats easily so I have to keep him in a short hair cut unless I want to spend hours brushing him out everyday. You are more likely to spend more money on a Maltese than on a Yorkie, especially if you want to buy from a good breeder as they tend to cost more than Yorkies. I can't recommend enough to find a reputable breeder when it comes to Maltese... it will really make a difference in what kind of adult dog you end up with. I didn't do my homework and ended up buying from a newspaper ad and my Maltese is larger than standard and has a cottony coat. But my biggest piece of advice is to search for a breeder who is breeding the qualities and personality you want in a dog. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions and check out some Maltese forums to get some more information and feedback. Good luck on whatever you decide!
