I love maltese! I have Chloe, and my mother has a male and female maltese as well. They just fit our personality so well. Not to say we don't have the best time with our yorkie, but I could probably not handle two. Maltese are calmer, they can be very playful and silly, not terrier feisty, easier to potty train. Extremely loyal to their owner. They can learn tricks, although not as easy as a yorkie and mine don't really care to do them to much. They do pick a favorite person, I like that actually. Hair care is definately a daily thing, but I enjoy that time as well. Tearstaining can be kept under control, some get it really bad and others not at all. Between me and my mom's dogs, we tried different brands of food and all three of them have perfectly white faces now. Some maltese have more silky hair compared to cottony. My mom's female does not mat at all, her male hardly mats. Chloe mats pretty bad and she has wavy hair. I've been keeping my mom's female for an extended period of time, she is the most loving devoted little thing, she just lives to be cuddled. Chloe is very silly and playful. And well, Tucker, he is a rotton little puppy. But hopefully will grow out of that. He is our first male dog, so I don't know if their personality is different or not, he does not like to cuddle too much, seems more independent. Our two girls are not yappy at all.
Here's a picture of my Chloe, my mom's Lexi and my mom's male Tucker (doesn't he just look mischievous!)
