My sisters dog (my breeding) lost his leg due to an accident. They tried to save the leg but it became apparent that it would have to be amputated. The vet had her wear a t-shirt the day prior and bring it with him for the surgery so that he would wake up with her smell. He has recovered well and is doing fine. I think that it was a great idea.
