I only let mine chew on it until it gets down to the last 2 inches. I usually keep them on my bed and they come in and lay down at night and chew and then we put them up until the next night. You can use them whenever but I like to be right there while they chew anything like this - just in case they get a chunk off. I haven't ever had any trouble with these but just like to be cautious.
