I know how scary that can be. Otis is a runner and WILL NOT come back. He got out twice at my friends house when her daughter opened the door to talk to her mom. Also, he got out of an open space in my back fence one time. I totally panic. I've been lucky and got him back safely every time, but as a result I am a total freak about closed gates and open doors. I have a sign on my front door that says "watch for Otis" and have now put a partial expen in front of it. Also, I check the gate every time I let him out to potty. Glad you were able to get him back to you. Good luck searching for a solution.
