I had to put a stop payment on a check written a few years ago for being way way over charged for a part to repair my fridge. The part being replaced cost retail $12.00 and the company that repaired my fridge charged me over $150.00 for the part. I call and spoke with the owner and a very nice, polite way and wanted to know why such a markup for such an inexpensive part. He was a real a**hole and told me that this was the way he did business. I proceded to let him know that I was going to take him to the Better Business Bureau and contact the State Contractors License Board. His reply was "Lady do what you have to do"... Well I went ahead and put a stop payment on the check which was good for six months. To make a long story short....after 6 months the check was cashed (he put it for payment every month) I called the bank wanting to know why they went ahead and paid the check and was informed that in order to keep a check from being paid you would need to renew the stop payment every 6 months or close out your checking account. This was all news to me...and the lowlife got away with getting his money....Now I am much more educated on the process of stop payments on checks....
